Back from our surf we drove the short distance to Lorne, where we had rented a cabin at the caravan park. I was not impressed with the place at all.... a tent would have been much more comfortable... the only saving grace was the hot shower.. low flow shower heads have not made it to Southern Victoria yet.. thankfully... you know its a good flow when it drains the 50 gallon hotwater system in 30 seconds... just what I needed to get my core body temperature back up.
Lorne is an interesting sea side town, not really small anymore, but it retains that small town feel. Its a green town, the place is full of friendly birds, including ducks and cockatoos who have no problem eating out of your hands.
For dinner we walked up to the Lorne Pub, a huge building on a rise with a great view of the main beach. I had the obligatory Chicken Palmy of course.... Melbourne Pub staple food... washed down with a couple of beers. After dinner we walked from the caravan park along a small river to a bridge that led to the main beach, as per picture above.
The next morning I walked out to beach again and took the below picture before walking back into town to get some breakfast. I went to a local bakery where I discovered another long lost Melbourne food... the Coffee Scroll!!
From Lorne we drove back to Cathedral rock for another surf... the surf was better, but much more crowded... you could only catch a wave if someone else stuffed up and fell off. Guaranteed that minimum two people would drop in on you each wave...
After 2 nights with little sleep i was not at my peak, but enjoyed myself anyway, caught a few good waves.
From Lorne we drove back towards Geelong, stopping at Split Rock Lighthouse for a lunch of fish and chips. The bay before the lighthouse (last pic below) looked interesting and worth a return trip. While we were there we saw a bodyboarder trying to surf the outer break with no armstrap... he quickly lost his board and had to swim a long way back to shore......
