Live Update
Ok, so maybe staying at the Star Bar in Sydney to 2am when I had a 8am flight to Melbourne wasn’t real smart, but hey... Im on holiday right...
My friend Boe and family picked me up from Avalon airport at around 10am and we set off down the Great Ocean Road.
Cathedral Rock is between Anglesea and Lorne, not more than a car park, but one of the best surf breaks on this side of the coast outside of Bells. Cathedral is not a beginner break, its a thick, clean wave with a steep drop-off, that crashes over a jagged rock shelf. There’s even a sign to warn surfers about all the dangers.. kinda like a dare, actually.....
Entry to Cath is not free, and helps sets a minimum balls requirement.....actually the launch of the shelf into the raging surf is not half as bad as the exit, but getting crunched after you’ve had an epic surf is a lot cooler than before.
My entry was fairly painless.. there was a solid 1-1.5 metre swell running.tame by Cath standards. We had timed it well from our point of view.... low tide (peak season) was more than a few hours away, so we got we only had to share the rides with one other...rare for a school holiday weekend.
I had a great session on Saturday, caught many good waves... some clean sets over 2 metres came through...I gave Boe some grief over backing out of some waves but the did it myself a couple of times... nothing like looking over the lip of wave down a 2 meter vertical drop over shallow rocks to wake you up...
After 3 hours and a 5 degree drop in my core body temp, we decided it was exit time... it was pretty rough.. Boe lost a fin and I grazed my knees, but we survived to visit another day...so it was all good.... From Cath we drove into Lorne where we spent the night....TBC
